Xabi Alonso Is Now Set To Remain At Bayer Leverkusen Next Season
News broke last night stating that Xabi Alonso would not be on the final list of candidates to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool at the end of the season, and the reason has now been declared in the media. Alonso is set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season, and lead the club into the Champions League.
The Spanish manager is currently unbeaten this season with the German side, and they sit atop the Bundesliga table at the minute, 10 points clear of Bayern Munich in second. They are also in the Europa League last 16, and could face Liverpool in the final if they go all the way.
Alonso Set To Stay:
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Xabi Alonso is set to remain at Bayer Leverkusen for next season at least, and there is an announcement expected from the Spaniard to confirm that news. Liverpool and Bayern Munich were informed of the news recently, and both have begun looking at other alternatives to bring in as their new managers.
Alonso has a release clause in 2025 that will be active for any interested clubs to trigger, but the belief is that Liverpool and Bayern will have appointed long-term successors by that stage. There is a feeling that Alonso may be waiting for the Real Madrid job, with Carlo Ancelotti rumoured to be leaving in the coming seasons.
Liverpool are expected to turn their attention to Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim, who is now the pole favourite to take over at Anfield this summer. Bayern Munich’s choice to replace Thomas Tuchel is less clear, but names like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have been thrown around. Jose Mourinho’s name is expected to be mentioned in the coming weeks.
Not the fairytale ending many Liverpool fans would have wanted, but Leverkusen fans will be delighted with Alonso’s decision to stay put and try and build a dynasty.
