Manchester United Target Move For Matthijs De Ligt
Manchester United are now targeting a potential move for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs De Ligt as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of next season. The Dutch defender has been on the club’s radar since he left Ajax and during his time at the club, and the decision to re-ignite the interest now has been described as an INEOS one.
David Ornstein broke the news last night regarding United’s decision to potentially chase a move for De Ligt, with the defender set to leave Bayern Munich this summer. His time at the club has not gone how he would have liked, but there may be a chance to prove himself at the top level again with a club like Manchester United.
United Eye De Ligt:
The feeling at the moment is that United could get a deal done for less than the £65m Bayern paid for the player. Any potential deal has been described as independent from that of a deal for Jarrad Branthwaite, as the Red’s are still keen on bringing the former PSV defender into the club this summer if a deal is possible. Everton are holding out for upwards of £70m at the moment, which is a fee United are currently unwilling to pay.
De Ligt would likely be a direct replacement for Raphael Varane at right centre-back. He is also admired by Erik ten Hag, with the Dutch manager having been in charge of the player during his time at the club. De Ligt was part of the Ajax side that marched to the semi-finals of the Champions League back in 2019.
There’s no guarantee a deal will happen as of yet, but signing the player would be smart business from Manchester United.
