Manchester United Legend Peter Schmeichel Launches a Brutal Criticism on Luke Shaw
On Tuesday afternoon, Manchester United released a statement on the injury status of starting left-back and England international, Luke Shaw.
“Luke Shaw will miss the opening games of the Premier League season due to a calf injury sustained at the start of pre-season training.”
The former Southampton player hasn’t played for the Red Devils since February, when he was forced off before halftime due to a muscle injury. Despite this, Shaw made three appearances for the Three Lions at the 2024 European Championships, including a start in the final. This has led to much criticism from fans and former players alike, including treble-winning goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel.
Schmeichel Takes Aim At Shaw:
Live on BBC Radio 5 Live, the Danish shotstopper said
“Luke Shaw last played (for Man Utd) in February and yet he still went to the Euros. I think he played a little bit in the quarter-final, and then some of the semi-final and then he played the final. Now, he’s injured again. He’s so important. He’s got experience and he’s a top class left-back.
He’s a Manchester United player – we pay him. He should be focusing and prioritising Manchester United and not his country.”
Without Shaw, Ten Hag will be forced to experiment with left-backs yet again. Tyrell Malacia would be the most natural replacement, but he remains out with a knee problem, making it almost 400 days out injured.
Last season, Sofyan Amrabat, Victor Lindelof, and Diogo Dalot were all used at left-back instead of the Englishman. However, Amrabat is currently still a Fiorentina player; Victor Lindelof’s future remains in doubt and Dalot was very impressive at right-back last season, forcing Wan-Bissaka to switch sides at times. New signing Noussair Mazraoui is another option on the left side of defence, but he is more experienced at right-back.
Youngster Harry Amass is another option at left-back for the Red Devils, but at just 17 he cannot be relied on to start every game. Amass impressed many fans in pre-season, with his performance against Mohammed Salah, but having him as the only natural left-back option at the club would be incredibly risky.
