SOURCES: Manchester United players backing Ruben Amorim’s system despite reports to the contrary

Reports have circulated this week suggesting the players at Manchester United are having doubts about Ruben Amorim’s system, but sources, who will not be named as we bid to protect them, have been speaking to AttackingFootball recently and have suggested strongly that the team is fully behind the manager and is convinced he can turn things around if given the time at the club. Sporting CP’s journey to success under Ruben from a dark position when he took over was referenced.

There is a belief that if the manager is given time to transform and continue to coach his tactics into the team over the coming months, things will turn around in the right direction for Manchester United.

Player’s fully behind Ruben Amorim

A report has circulated under every manager post-Sir Alex Ferguson regarding the player’s not trusting a particular system, and this has led to large-scale criticism of the players, resulting in abuse and online vitriol. According to our sources, there is a togetherness internally amongst the players, with a huge backing going towards their manager. United have won six of their last eight games in all competitions, and have finally put together a run this season, although it still feels like they are losing every game at this moment in time due to the performances.

Ruben may not have anticipated the number of losses he’s faced, but he consistently believed it would be a challenging task to overcome, which is why he asked to assume leadership at the season’s conclusion rather than the midway point. To alternate a team from a back four system, especially when the profiles within the team are built for that system, and then transform them into a fully flourishing back three system midway through the campaign with three days of training at a time is a task any manager would find difficult. It’s long-term gain, but it does cause short-term pain, and the players are aware of that, even if the short-term pain is as bad as it is at the moment.

Public and private backing:

The manager has not only been backed in private, but publicly the likes of Toby Collyer, Diogo Dalot and Leny Yoro. All three have sung the praises of the Portuguese coach, while highlighting just how much he demands from each player on a daily basis. United still has the opportunity to secure a trophy this season, with an FA Cup match against Fulham and a spot in the final 16 of the Europa League looming. While qualifying for Europe won’t be a decisive factor for Amorim, it will significantly ease the club’s financial and recruitment burden next season, as winning either the FA Cup or the Europa League provides a pathway to European competition.

Those who spoke to us suggested Ruben will leave a “major mark” on the football club if he is given the time to implement his methods truly. The former Casa Pia manager won Sporting their first league title in 19 years and mended a complete disconnect between the fans, the hierarchy and the players on the pitch with his transformation. Those close to the situation at the time maintain it was always Ruben’s way or no other way, and he’d rather leave a football club than concede in his beliefs in regards to what his system could do. In the past he has said he will offer a resignation if he feels what he is doing is not working out in the manner it should, but he stays true to his principles no matter what, and this is one of the main traits that gives his players such belief in what he is aiming to do.

“Give him time” is the message internally:

Amorim was brought in because of what he had done at Sporting. He was not brought in to tweak his system entirely and start doing something he wasn’t hired for. Of course, tweaks have to be made as the Premier League is a different league than the Portuguese league, but within those tweaks the same principles and same goals in and out of possession will always remain while Amorim is at the club. The manager is sticking to who he is, and according to what we’ve been told, the players continue to believe in his system.

In an era where every day Manchester United fans must feel like they’re falling into more and more bad news, some relief can be taken from the fact that the dressing room is united behind Ruben Amorim, even if certain news publications are suggesting to the contrary.
