Sheffield United put their trust in Trusty
Sheffield United have announced their 4th signing since their return to the English premier league. By putting their trust in 24-year-old centre back Auston Trusty. The American international will join for a fee of 5 million pounds after spending a year out on loan at Birmingham City from parent club Arsenal. Starting 44 games for them and helping them clinch survival by 4 points. So will Trusty be able to do the same this year for Sheffield United?
Sheffield United had a very impressive campaign last year. Finishing second In the Championship with 91 points rewarding them promotion back to the top flight of English football. The blades also went on an impressive Fa cup run reaching the semi finals of the competition. Unfortunately they faced Man City, who would go on to win the competition and the treble. As difficult as facing the world champions already is, Sheffield would be without two of their top performers Tommy Doyle and James McAtee. Due to their parent clubs both being Manchester City making them ineligible for the game at Wembley. The pair were vital for Paul Heckingbottom in the 2022/2023 campaign. With Tommy Doyle scoring the winner in the Fa cup quarter-final courtesy of a 91st minute screamer. In addition his Manchester City partner McAtee managed 12 goal involvements in the league helping Sheffield to get promoted.
Unfortunately for the Blades as of this moment neither Doyle or McAtee have extended their stays at the club. On top of this Sheffield United’s leading goal scorer Illman Ndiaye, who managed 14 goals and 10 assists, was sold to Marseille for 17 million Euros. This is a massive blow for the Blades who were hoping for Ndiaye to renew his contract at the club. Evidentially this has left fans worried of a relegation repeat of the 2021/2022 season.
So what have Sheffield United done to stay in the Prem?
As of right now…….not a lot. Sheffield United have currently spent £11 million pounds on 4 players this transfer window with nearly half of that going on the already mentioned Auston Trusty. Their second most expensive signing of the window is Bénie Adama Traoré. Traoré cost the club 4 million pounds from Swedish side Häcken, scoring 12 goals in 14 games he will hope to continue this form in the premier league. Sheffield’s next signing comes in the form of a loan signing from French club Troyes. The 22 year old left back Yasser Larouci made 30 appearances last season. Anis Ben Slimane, a Tunisian international with 27 appearances and 4 goals would be the next bit of business. Costing the club 2.7 million to land the attacking midfielder from Danish club Brondby IF.
With just over a week to go till the return of Premier League football, with Sheffield United one of the favourites to get relegated, you’d like to think there will be more additions to the squad before the window shuts on the 1st of September. Luckily for the Blades their is still plenty of time for them to strengthen squad, or will the Blades put all of their trust in Trusty.
