PLAYER RATINGS: Seagulls Gain Point at the Emirates After Controversial Arsenal Red Card
A tight affair between two teams who had a 100% record in the league, which ended in neither team maintaining the feat. A refereeing decision that will, no doubt, be the talking point of this matchweek, shifted the ties for the Gulls as they avoid defeat.
Let’s get into the ratings, then.
Player Ratings
Arsenal
David Raya (7.5): Arsenal’s Man of the Match against Villa, and possibly their best player again today. 3 saves, 2 crucial ones against Welback and Ayari. Unfortunately, the former wasn’t enough to keep the ball away from goal, resulting in the eventual equaliser.
Ben White (7): A performance that was difficult to judge. Had some amazing tackles but also some minor mistakes. Solid enough.
William Saliba (7.5): Most touches in the game by an Arsenal player. Not the best performance to his high standards, good, but nothing special.
Gabriel Magalhães (7): Similar to Saliba, solid pairing that was punished once for their high line. Not bad, just not quite enough.
Jurrien Timber (6.5): Looked brilliant on the ball before the sending off, but didn’t win many duels. Dropped off after the move to RWB, hooked after a minor niggle, hope he’s okay.
Thomas Partey (5.5): Again, looked alright before the sending off, all over the place after. Lost possession 7 times, sub-40% duels won, and his failure to track his man costed Arsenal the three points.
Martin Ødegaard (5): Extremely quiet for his high standards. Visible knock early in the game could’ve been the reason, was taken off early and deservedly so.
Declan Rice (3): Quiet in the first half, booked for an unnecessary tackle. Ridiculous way to get sent off, extremely questionable decision by the referee, but also very naive from such an experienced player to give the officials any reason to reach to his back pocket.
Bukayo Saka (7.5): Another solid shift from the Gunners’ Mr. Consistent. His press earned himself an assist. Great positioning got him into another big chance despite playing out of position, but failed to finish.
Leandro Trossard (5.5): The sole change for Mikel Arteta from the Gunners’ win at Villa. Didn’t get involved too much, subbed off early as a mix of his poor performance and Rice’s sending off.
Kai Havertz (7): Well taken goal, lovely chip over the keeper. Great hold up play as usual, but nothing too special other than that.
Substitutions
Riccardo Calafiori (6): (59′), Difficult circumstances to come on, did his job both at LWB and LCB
Gabriel Martinelli (6): (74′), Looked fresh and seemed like the only one going for it late on, but didn’t get the service. Didn’t really get involved much in the end.
Oleksandr Zinchenko (N/A): (80′)
Brighton
Bart Verbruggen (8), MOTM: Top performance. 6 saves, including one at close range to deny Saka. Solid on the ball. Not much to complain about.
Joël Veltman (6): Not a stranger to the dark arts, and he’s done it again. Earning his opponent a red card after kicking him. Poor performance otherwise though. Lost the ball 13 times.
Jan Paul van Hecke (7): Good performance, comfortable, accurate, and solid at the back.
Lewis Dunk (7): Made up for his mistake that cost the goal with a phenomenal long ball to send Welbeck in behind. More touches than anyone else in the game. Mostly solid despite a mistake leading to goal.
Jack Hinshelwood (5.5): Lost the ball 14 times, not the best performance defensively, but got involved in the attack. Conceded a big chance down his flank that luckily for him, wasn’t converted.
James Milner (N/A): Early injury.
Carlos Baleba (7): Solid in the air, accurate passing. Could’ve been more involved, but solid all around.
Yankuba Minteh (6): Worse performance in blue and white so far, though he played okay-ish. Big chance missed, booked, and subbed off early.
João Pedro (8): Albion’s star man delivers again, pouncing on a saved shot to earn the Seagulls a well-deserved point. Was okay otherwise, nothing special, but delivered at a huge moment
Kaoru Mitoma (6.5): Dangerous at times, quiet at others. Hit and miss one-on-one against White, crossing nowhere near his best.
Danny Welbeck (6): Not the most involved, but got in behind and played a huge part in the equaliser.
Substitutions
Yasin Ayari (6): (17′), Massive chance missed by the Swede, shooting straight at Raya despite half the goal being open. Okay otherwise, nothing special.
Pervis Estupiñán (7): (72′), Very involved after coming on, seamlessly easing his way back in after injury.
Georginio Rutter (6): (72′)
Julio Enciso (N/A): (85′)
Simon Adingra (N/A): (85′)
