SOURCES: Manchester United Remain Interested In Eric Maxim Choupo Moting
Manchester United are still searching for a striker within this January transfer window, and Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is a player the club have been linked with in recent weeks. Erik ten Hag is keen to bring in some extra cover at the club to help 20-year-old Rasmus Hojlund’s development, and Choupo-Moting is someone that the club could bring in. At 34 years of age, the Cameroon international has bags of experience at two top European clubs, Paris Saint Germain and the German Champions. He could be about to add Manchester United to that list.
UNITED REMAIN INTERESTED IN CHOUPO-MOTING:
We understand that Manchester United remain interested in bringing in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting within this transfer window. While United have not made an offer as of yet, the club do have interest in the Bayern striker. The German club would sell the striker if the English side made an offer during the days left in the current window.
Ten Hag’s side have a bit of time left to decide which player they want at the centre-forward position, but any potential deal is expected to be a loan deal or a very cheap transfer. The Cameroon striker’s contract will expire this summer at his current club, meaning any transfer is expected to be relatively cheap. United have their hands tied due to FFP regulations despite the recent minority takeover from INEOS. Any potential big deals are anticipated in the summer.
A Good Signing?
Many fans remember Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting from his days at Stoke City but he has proven since he can be a reliable back-up in a big side. He has 48 goal contributions in 108 games for Bayern and helped the team a lot last season after the departure of Robert Lewandowski. Game time has diminished this season with the signing of Harry Kane, and a move away now seems to be the most likely avenue for his career.
Manchester United have hung their hat on Rasmus Hojlund as their long-term striker, but the main issue at the club presently is the last of options off the bench to give the Denmark international a break. Anthony Martial is currently out with a hip injury, meaning the club have no recognised striker in the squad to help carry the load.
Wout Weghorst’s loan was relatively a success last season despite the lack of goals, and Choupo-Moting could provide that type of impact for the remainder of this season. The Dutch striker helped United win the Carabao Cup, assisting Marcus Rashford’s goal in the final.
There are other strikers on the list, and deals the club have already walked away from. The Reds looked at the possibility of bringing in Timo Werner but walked away due to the £5m loan fee RB Leipzig were asking for. Tottenham in the end have landed the striker, as is well documented. Serhou Guirassy is another player they’ve been linked with, but his involvement in the AFCON tournament as well as the fact he is currently happy to stay at Stuttgart may complicate matters.
Chuopo-Moting represents a cheap short-term striker with experience at doing the exact role he is being asked to do. Many will say it’s more poor business from the Reds, but with one hand tied behind their back financially in this window, there is not much else they can do at this moment in time. The interest is there, but as we stated the bid is still not sent. Bayern are open to doing business, which means this may be one to watch until the end as United continue to hunt for a striker.
