FPL GW20 Best Captain: Palmer, Salah, Haaland & More

After a hectic Christmas period, we have arrived at GW20. We’re having a look at the best captaincy picks ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.

Let’s hope our surprise pick for GW20 gets among the goals on Saturday afternoon!

FPL GW20 Best Captain Options: The Usual Suspects

  • Mo Salah (13.6m)
  • Expected points: 7.74

The Egyptian continues to perform at the highest level producing unbelievable numbers week in week out.

It’s no surprise he is both the league’s top goalscorer and assist maker. He continues to be the go-to man in Liverpool’s brilliant attack under new manager Arne Slot as the Reds surge towards another title race.

His record against this weekend’s opponents Manchester United is ridiculous. Having played the Red Devils 16 times in his career, he has chipped in with 15 goals and 6 assists.

And the way both teams are currently playing, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him adding to this tally on Sunday afternoon as the Reds welcome their neighbours to Anfield.

Talks continue to circulate if the goal machine will be at Anfield next season. Liverpool fans are desperate for him to extend his contract with the club, however the situation continues to drag on.

  • Erling Haaland (14.8m)
  • Expected points: 6.64

It’s no secret that Manchester City’s start to the season has been far from impressive and goal-hungry Erling Haaland has struggled to perform to the levels of previous seasons.

But the Norwegians lack of confidence in front of goal will surely be boosted ahead of this weekends clash with West Ham.

In GW3, Haaland bagged a hattrick as Pep Guardiola’s side ran riot in a 3-1 victory at the London Stadium. He will be hoping for a similar outcome when the Hammers arrive in Manchester on Saturday afternoon off the back of a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of league leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

Haaland could hardly wish for a better record against this week’s opponents, he has lined up 5 times against West Ham with 5 victories to his name.

He will be hoping his form drastically improves against a vulnerable Hammers side this weekend after a difficult couple of months.

  • Cole Palmer (11.4m)
  • Expected Points: 6.19

Although Chelsea have gone through a rough patch recently with a number of points dropped as they hunt down league leaders Liverpool, Cole Palmer continues to produce quality performances as he cements his place as one of the league’s elite.

They face Crystal Palace away this weekend, having conceded 5 to Arsenal at Selhurst Park a couple of weeks ago, Palace have struggled to show their solidity that we have become accustomed to over the last couple of seasons, especially at home.

It means Chelsea’s task of breaking down their defence this weekend looks less daunting as they travel across London to face their neighbours.

Palmer is yet to hit the net in 3 appearances against the Eagles. He will be hoping to change that stat this weekend.

Bukayo Saka (10.3m)

Saka had surgery on his hamstring last week and is set to be out for a couple of months, a big blow to the Gunners.

After Jhon Duran’s straight red card against Newcastle, Ollie Watkins is keen to take advantage of his run in the team and this weekend’s fixture against Leicester serves up a perfect opportunity to get on the scoresheet and impress manager Unai Emery.

Duran had overtaken Watkins as the main striker over the past month but the Englishman is back in the starting 11 after the Colombian saw red on Boxing Day.

Watkins has scored in 2 of his last 3 appearances against the Foxes and will hope to add to that tally this weekend. Villa currently sit in 9th position only a couple of points off European qualification.

It’s been a low-key season to date for Villa but after a number of impressive results in Europe pre-Christmas, they are perfectly positioned for a big 2025 and Watkins will hope to be the main man if he can regain his form.

With all things considered, bringing Watkins into your team and giving him the captains armband ahead of this weekend’s GW looks a good move.
