FA Confirms Enzo Fernandez Could Still Be Subject To Investigation

The English Football Association has confirmed to Attacking Football that Enzo Fernandez could still face investigation & potentially punishment over his social media activity last month while on international duty with Argentina.

Following Argentina’s Copa America success, Enzo Fernandez appeared to livestream himself and his teammates on the team bus, indulging in a chant that mocked the French national team based on their heritage. The French national team quickly raised a complaint to FIFA, which subsequently launched an investigation.

The video was widely condemned and was even publicly shamed by his Chelsea teammate and Frenchman, Wesley Fofana, who shared the video, captioning it “Football in 2024: uninhibited racism.”.

Enzo Fernandez apologised to his teammates and Chelsea FC now considers the matter closed. However, there were some raised eyebrows. Chelsea were apparently allowed to mark their own homework.

The FA were seemingly staying quiet on the situation. One particular reason this raised eyebrows was because of Edison Cavani’s charge in 2020, which was related to social media activity [during his time at Manchester United].

In December 2020, Cavani very quickly became subject to an FA investigation and he was subsequently banned for 3 matches as the Uruguayan was deemed to have brought the game into disrepute because of a post that could be perceived as racist.

When approached by Attacking Football, asking why there has been no communication from the FA on this matter, the FA integrity team said: “There is an active FIFA investigation regarding this matter, so therefore there is no current FA involvement while FIFA conducts theirs.”

So though the matter may be closed at Chelsea Football Club, there could still be punishments coming down the line from either FIFA or the FA.
