Manchester United have been rumoured to be focusing on homegrown talent under the new ownership spearheaded by Sir Jim Ratclife, and Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg could be one of the first signings under the new regime this summer. The 16-year-old has been impressive for the Black Cats this season, featuring 21 times in the Championship, scoring twice.
United are anticipated to spend smartly this summer, moving away from their previous tendency to overspend on big names, which hasn’t worked out in the last decade. Rigg is yet to sign a new deal at Sunderland, and talks over a new deal are currently not moving in the right direction.

Rigg has played for Sunderland his entire career, making 18 appearances for the U18’s and 12 appearances for the U21’s. The midfielder has also featured in all age groups for his national side, England, captaining the U18’s against Belgium last November. He has operated in a number of positions this season at Sunderland, playing on the wings as well as centrally, His favorite position is in the central of midfield, but his versatility will be something that has drawn Manchester United in.
He is currently signed to a two year scholarship deal that will expire next June. If Sunderland does not sell him this summer, they run the risk of losing him for free next season.
