Manchester United Will Sign A New Left-Back In The Summer Transfer Window
Manchester United have now been confirmed, to be looking to sign a new left-back in the January transfer window by Fabrizio Romano. The club is drawing up a shortlist of names to possibly be signed ahead of the window at present and has been around Europe and South America scouting a number of targets to see which ones would fit the side best.
United have been plagued at left-back this season, with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia missing large portions of the campaign. Malacia is very unlikely to play any part in the season for United, after suffering a knee injury in pre-season. The Dutch defender received surgery on the injury, but the surgery was botched, meaning he had to undergo another one to solve the issue.
Luke Shaw is also unlikely to play a part in United’s remaining ten Premier League games, and will be touch and go for the EURO 2024 campaign, as was declared by Gareth Southgate this week. Erik ten Hag will likely have to make do with Aaron Wan-Bissaka at left-back for the remainder of the season, with the right-back doing a solid job on Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah 11 days ago in the win at Old Trafford.
Possible Targets For United:
Miguel Gutierrez is a name mentioned by us here at AttackingFootball before, and we understand there is interest from the club in the Girona defender. Any potential deal may depend on what Real Madrid plan on doing with the player, as they currently have an £8 million buy-back clause in his contract, which they can exercise this summer if they choose to do so. There is a belief inside Girona that Madrid will try to exercise the clause, but as of yet, they haven’t pulled the trigger.
Gutierrez has been in fine form for the Spanish side this summer, but one potential stop-gap could be his affiliation with the City Football Group, which owns Girona. The player is well known to United’s new CEO, Omar Berrada, who oversaw operations at Girona over the last number of seasons.
Another player the club has been linked to is Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. The Hungarian international has had a fine first season at the Vitality Stadium, and a number of top clubs have begun to take notice, including United. Manchester City are also rumoured to be keeping a keen eye on the defender.
Antonee Robinson is also someone United have been linked with, with the Fulham defender having some of the most impressive statistics in the entire league this season when compared to players in his position. Liverpool likes the American defender, but no club has made a move for his services as of yet, with the summer transfer window drawing closer.
Academy Talent:
United may not need to sign a left-back if Harry Amass impresses in their pre-season tour. The U18 defender has shown his class at Carrington so far this season, having signed from Watford last year. Amass was in the Watford first-team squad as a 15-year-old, being named on the bench in an FA Cup clash.
The English defender has been nicknamed ‘,Mini Luke Shaw’, and is one of the most promising players coming through the ranks at the club. The Reds have a pre-season tour in America this summer, and Erik ten Hag may use the opportunity to test Amass, in a similar way to how he tested Kobbie Mainoo last summer against Arsenal and Real Madrid.
If Amass impresses, United could change their plans, but as of right now, the thought process internally is to sign a new left-back when the window opens.
