Former Manchester United Target Benjamin Sesko Has £43m Summer Release Clause
In January of 2022, Manchester United were well in the hunt for Benjamin Sekso before his inevitable move from RB Salzburg to RB Leipzig. The Reds were heavily invested in trying to sign the Slovenian striker, but as usual, over the last few years, they failed to get a deal over the line for a highly-rated young star.
Sesko has gone on to do good things for Leipzig since signing, but many would perhaps say his stock has slightly diminished since the days of being linked with the English club. Despite that, if he was to become available in the summer window, several clubs would be queuing up at the door of the German club to try and poach Sesko. He is a top striker with several years left in the tank to grow and develop, and he could be the perfect striker for Manchester United to sign to grow with Rasmus Hojlund over the next decade.
Sesko’s Release Clause:
News breaking today from Phillip Hinze of Sky Sports Germany is suggesting that Sesko has a £43m release clause at Leipzig that will be valid this summer. This is something United are expected to be aware of, and the type of signing they look to make in the first summer window under the new ownership in INEOS. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team are likely to try and add a British core to the squad during their first window and beyond, but exceptions may have to be made when it comes to huge talents like Sesko.
The clause was inserted in the contract of the striker to ensure that he could leave Leipzig for a bigger club with little or no fuss when the time came. The German side are not usually reluctant to allow players to leave, acknowledging their place as a selling club, but the Slovakian striker wanted to be 100% sure that he could explore something new if he pleased and not have to worry about whether the club would let him go.
Reports in the past have suggested that Real Madrid are the dream destination of Sesko, but with the Galacticos set to spend big on Kylian Mbappe in the summer and youngster Endrick coming through the ranks in the coming seasons, it’s likely the 20-year-old could end up in the Premier League.
Who Could Sign Him?
Manchester United will be in the market for a striker again this summer but it’s unlikely to be a major priority. Right-wing and centre-back are two positions the club are desperate to overhaul when the window opens in June, and they may look to sign an older cheaper striker to try and help Rasmus Hojlund develop in the coming years.
One club that will be one to keep an eye on regarding Sesko are Chelsea. The London club are reported to have an under-25 mantra when it comes to signing players and the Leipzig forward fits that criteria. The main target for Todd Boehly is expected to be Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, but failure to land him could see the Blues pivot to Sesko, especially with the fee being so small.
Arsenal could also throw their name in the hat as they look to add more firepower to the squad. It’s been well documented that Mikel Arteta’s side have been lacking in front of goal this season, and had they signed Sesko when Manchester United were initially linked to him we may be looking at a completely different Premier League table right now. Nonetheless, the Gunners are likely to dip into the market again this summer, and they could do a lot worse than signing a player the calibre of the former Salzburg man for the fee on offer.
