FPL GW22 Best Captain: Palmer, Salah, Haaland & More

And just as GW21 ends, FPL GW22 starts. Following a round of midweek league action, we’re having a look at the best captaincy picks ahead of the weekend round of fixtures. Here are the best captaincy choices ahead of FPL GW22.

Our surprise picks have been getting very little luck lately but we are hoping our choice ahead of GW22 will change that. GW21 we picked Manchester United’s talisman Bruno Fernandes, and despite winning 3-1, the Portuguese midfielder was unable to get on the scoresheet or assist Amad Diallo as he bagged his first Premier League Hattrick.

He did however get 2 bonus points and finished with a respectable 4 points to his name and bring his FPL points tally for the season to 92.

Let’s hope our surprise pick for GW22 gets among the goals Sunday afternoon!

FPL GW22 Best Captain Options: The Usual Suspects

  • Cole Palmer (11.4m)
  • Expected Points: 7.67

A stuttering Chelsea welcome Wolverhampton Wanders to Stamford Bridge on Monday night desperate for a win after going 5 Premier League matches without gaining 3 points.

At the beginning of the season, the Blues defeated Wolves 6-2 as they continued their blistering start under new coach Enzo Maresca.

Palmer was in top form that day chipping in with 1 goal and 3 assists, he has continued to perform consistently at the highest level this season and is rightfully in the conversation to be crowned player of the season. He has been creating chance after chance this season with only Bukayo Saka creating more than his 18.

Since then, Chelsea have begun to slow down, with only 1 win in 6 in the Premier League. This weekend they will have their sights set on getting back to winning ways however.  As so often happens, Cole Palmer can be at the centre of that.

They have dropped back to 5th place and have dropped crucial points in the title race. Palmer did pick up a knock during Chelsea’s game against Bournemouth and hasn’t trained yet, so beware, he may not play in GW22.

  • Erling Haaland (14.8m)
  • Expected points: 6.58

After signing a 9-and-a-half year contract this week to stay at the Etihad, Haaland will be keen to celebrate by bagging a goal when they travel to an ever-improving Ipswich Town this weekend.

Man City’s striker helped himself to a hattrick against the Tractor Boys at the beginning of the season and will hope to have a similar performance this weekend.

GW22 Haaland

City have had a far from impressive season to date, with manager Pep Guardiola wasting no time in diving into the January transfer window with a number of new arrivals rumoured. Haaland could be set to fire against Ipswich, with a new 9 and a half-year contract signed. Yes, you did read that right. It must be hard to stay humble, heh?

The Norwegian goal-machine has found it difficult at times to continue his goal-scoring runs this season but will feel 2025 can be a positive year as City aim to win their 2nd Champions League title in 3 years.

  • Mo Salah (13.7m)
  • Expected points: 7.49

For the first time this season Mo Salah has gone two matches without contributing to a Liverpool goal.

Some may say he may be going through a dip in form but the level the Egyptian played to in the first half of the season was always going to be hard to sustain over 38 matches.

This weekend, they travel to London to take on Brentford, a team the 32 year-old has enjoyed facing in the past. He has 5 goals in his last 4 appearances against the Bees.

The Reds lead at the top of the league has been cut to 4 points after draws with both Manchester United and Nottingham Forest. Arne Slot will not be panicking however as they sit in pole position with 18 matches of the season remaining.

Talks continue to circulate if the goal machine will be at Anfield next season. Liverpool fans are desperate for him to extend his contract with the club, however the situation continues to drag on. Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander Arnold are also in contract talks with the club.

FPL GW22 Best Captain Options: The Surprise Pick

  • Anthony Elanga (5.3m)
  • Expected points: 6.56

The former Manchester United man has lit up the right-wing for Nottingham Forest this season as they currently sit in 3rd position.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men drew with table toppers Liverpool in midweek to continue their 7 game unbeaten run in the league.

The City ground has become a fortress over the last few months as Forest look well-placed for a challenge at securing European football next season.

Swedish International Elanga has been one of many top performers for Forest this season and as they welcome Southampton to Nottingham this Sunday, a win for the home side is expected.

For a very affordable 5.3m, the 22 year-old looks like a great purchase judging on his performances so far this season. With a winnable game this weekend, it looks like the perfect time to bring in and captain the wide man as FPL begins to heat up.
