Derby boss Wayne Rooney is at fault for leaving Ireland midfielder ruled out for 12 weeks with an ankle injury after a 50-50 challenge in training.
The rams only have nine senior players registered for the upcoming season so Rooney joined in training to make up the numbers, he challenged for a ball with Knight and the Irish international came off the worst of it.
The 20 year old will now be out for at least 12 weeks which will be a blow to Ireland boss Stephen Kenny,Knight will miss Ireland’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September against Portugal,Azerbaijan and Serbia.
Knight had been playing well in the Irish midfield and scored his first international goal against Andorra.
“Jason will be out for eight to 12 weeks,” Rooney had said on Saturday following a 2-1 friendly defeat to Salford City.
“He has rocked his ankle, thankfully, he doesn’t need surgery but needs the time to make sure he gets his ankle strong again.
“Of course it is a huge blow, everyone knows what Knighty brings to us, he is a fantastic player, great energy, and he will be a loss, but we have to deal with that.”
