Jose Mourinho arrived at Stamford bridge in the summer of 2004 and announced himself as “the special one” he was one of the most sought after young coaches in the world just months prior to his arrival he provided one of the most iconic images in living memory as he sprinted down the touchline at Old Trafford following Porto’s last gasp winner against Manchester United. From 2002-2004 and Employing a 4-4-2 Diamond formation He led the Portuguese outfit to two league titles a Uefa cup and the most unlikely champions league title.
In his first spell at Chelsea Mourinho won two premier league titles two league cups and an fa cup, he used a 4-3-3 and it worked perfectly his side were rock solid at the back in the 04/05 season Chelsea conceded just 15 goals the fewest in a single season to date , Terry and Carvalho formed an excellent partnership with Makelele sitting in front of them, the attack wasn’t bad either Lampard got forward from midfield and scored goals like he does , Robben Joe Cole and Duff were the flying wingers with a certain Didier Drogba the striker, Mourinho found the perfect balance between attack and defence as his Chelsea side won all before them.
Inter milan 2008-2010
He moved to Italy in 2008 to manage Inter Milan where he won two Serie A titles one Coppa Italia and a Champions league, completing an historic treble in the 09/10 season. Everyone remembers his iconic run onto the pitch after 10 man inter knocked out Barcelona at their peak with Pep Guardiola in charge this is the type of achievement that makes him live up to his “special one” tag there’s an element of magic about him that he can pull off the impossible. He started off alternating between a 4-3-3 and a diamond but in his second season the signings of Samuel Etoo ,Wesley Sneijder and Thiago Motta enabled him to play a 4-2-3-1 formation which gave the team more balance.
Real madrid 2010-2013
Mourinho took the hot seat at the Bernabeu in 2010 he utilised an even more flexible 4-2-3-1 formation with Mesut Ozil as his No.10 Ronaldo and Di Maria on the wings and Benzema the focal point up top they played free flowing football and won the La Liga title in the 11/12 season breaking records for points collected (100) and goals scored (121) they consistently reached the semi finals of the champions league but couldn’t get one over the line.
Chelsea (second spell) 2013-2015
He returned for a dramatic second term at the bridge in 2013. He used the same 4-2-3-1 formation that he did with Madrid and the key signings of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa along with Eden Hazard back to his best Mourinho had Chelsea kings of England again in 14/15 also picking up a league cup. In the 13/14 season Liverpool were on the brink of winning the premier league title when Mourinho took his Chelsea side to Anfield to spoil the party,he set them up to frustrate with 11 men behind the ball they time wasted and continuously fouled they took advantage of that famous Gerrard slip to go 1-0 up and finished Liverpool off with a late counter attack from Willian, Jose was beating his chest in front of the away supporters he was loving it,it was the first sign we got of his really negative tactics to come.
Manchester united 2016-2018
Mourinho made the shock move to Manchester in 2016 although he picked up a league cup and Europa league in the 16/17 season he will argue he won trophies and was successful but his reputation took a hit with the football he produced it was largely boring and very defensive he didn’t seem like the fresh energetic Mourinho we seen at the start of his career he looked tired and was always having swipes at the media week in week out ultimately his negative tactics and poor results led to him being sacked in 2018.
Tottenham Hotspur 2019-Present
Mauricio Pochettino was sacked in November 2019 not long after bringing spurs to the champions league final but not many people would have seen Mourinho being the next Tottenham manager, while they have had some great players and teams down the years Spurs are still without a trophy since 2008 and Jose has won trophies everywhere he has been so maybe it was a shrewd appointment by Spurs. Last year he took over mid-season and had to pick up the pieces to see what he needed going forward,in the summer he signed Reguillon and Doherty in defence , Pierre Hojbjerg from Southampton in midfield and managed to get Gareth Bale on loan. In the recent all or nothing documentary Mourinho told his players that nice guys win nothing and that they need to be c*nts you can see he is bringing steel to this team they currently sit six points off the top of the premier league and in a league cup semi-final you would be a brave man to bet against Jose bringing silverware back to north London but recent results have shown flaws in his negative tactics, are we going to see the Manchester united version of Mourinho at spurs? Do his tactics need to change to be successful now?
Spurs took the lead in the first minute against wolves and tried to protect it for the rest of the game it felt inevitable that wolves would equalise it was identical to the Crystal Palace game earlier this month where the same thing happened they threw away a 3-0 advantage at home to West Ham earlier in this season while Newcastle also scored an injury time goal to steal a draw against them on top of Firmino’s late header at Anfield, Spurs have now dropped nine points with goals conceded in the final 10 minutes of games this season more than any other premier league team this isn’t a coincidence,if you sit on narrow leads and invite teams onto you these things will happen. After the west ham result there has been a clear shift to a more defensive approach from Mourinho they only conceded once in six matches after that. They often find themselves as a back six when out of possession with Hojbjerg and Sissoko dropping beside Alderweirald and Dier but they haven’t been the same going forward since. They scored 15 goals in the four premier league games prior to that compared to 11 in the last 10 quite a drop-off.
There was no complaints from the vast majority of supporters when Spurs collected 7 points from Manchester city , Chelsea and Arsenal but was the cautious approach really necessary at crystal palace? Or against a wolves side short of Raul Jimenez? Surely a team with Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwign and Tanguy Ndombele is capable of more than sitting back and soaking up the pressure against teams in the bottom half of the league?Saying all that Spurs are only six points off the top and wins this week against Fulham and Leeds will likely lift them to the champions league places.
Jose Mourinho is a serial winner he’s won trophies everywhere he has gone but will his current approach bring success back to North London? Time will tell.
